6 students & 2 staff spent several days in the Chicago area taking in the city, life and culture different to what they're used to in rural Minnesota. We took along our "flat people" Vern & Cindy Schroeder (students pick staff that cannot come with us so are made into flat people that we can take them with us!) We took a riverboat tour and wander around to get acquainted with the area.
(One 1st time flyer, hotel, Millennium Park, the Bean – was closed for renovations, Chicago River, unique architecture, Buckingham Fountain, the Bean (better pic).

Day 2: Chicago
Shedd Aquarium, Buckingham Fountain/Plaza, Art Institute of Chicago, Water Tower Place, Murder Mystery Walking Tour.
We saw dolphins, belugas, sea lion, penguins & a yellow submarine, ancient & modern art, found our Lego counterparts, solved a murder and learned a lot about Chicago’s early & shady history.

Day 3:
Stopped in Chinatown to check out the Chinese American Museum where we learned about Chinese culture and early immigrants in the Chicago area. Visited a few shops and had Dim Sum for lunch – some students had never experienced this type of meal – a variety of small dishes of dumplings, meats, rice & noodles. We walked off the meal with a tour of the Willis Tower and Skydeck.

Big thank you to all the NLCS friends and families. 2023-24 is officially in the books and the students are on their way home. please have a safe and relaxing summer. We'll see you again in August.
2024 Graduation. While this marks the smallest number of graduating students in our history, these students have exemplified great resiliency. Having to start their high school journey in the midst of "distance-learning" they struggled and have come out on top! Each student shared their experiences and words of wisdom (graduation requirement.) Congratulations 2024 grads!

Today is the day! You have 6 hours of school remaining, seniors!

Well, I tell you what. With all the activities today, if the kids aren't tired tonight. I don't know what would wear them out. We started the day with our last EE (environmental ed) activities for the year and then made our way to the Legion Beach for a day at the lake. There was swimmin', fishin', s'mores, and all kinds of running around. And the weather was perfect! Those strange, colorful things are wallets made from plastic bags.

Two days to go, seniors! Make them count!

I just had to post a few more pics from yesterday. There were too many good ones not to share. You know they're having fun when they're wet and covered in mud, but still smiling. Thank you Hartley staff for coming to work with us. Check them out of you're ever in the Duluth area. https://hartleynature.org/
