REQUIREMENTS

 A. Education Level

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A valid license to teach grades 6-12 in Minnesota
  • Preferred licensure areas: Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies

B. Experience Desired                       

Experience teaching in a “Project-Based Learning” program, and/or charter school, preferred but not required    

C. Physical Requirements*

  • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer;
  • to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
  • hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone;
  • speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone;
  • physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height;
  • and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 A. Implement Instruction

  • Communicate a high level of expectation
  • Have a current personalized learning plan for each student in the advisory group
  • Teach license area specific seminars as needed
  • Help lead recreational activities
  • Respond to daily student journals
  • Monitor daily sustained silent reading
  • Create and implement teacher-led advisory projects
  • Require students to analyze and apply knowledge
  • Display enjoyment, humor, and enthusiasm for teaching

 B. Evaluate Instruction

  • Support student academic progress and monitor each student’s progress toward graduation
  • Expect each NLCS student to earn at least 80 percent of his or her credits and provide an educationally sound explanation if this does not happen.
  • Provide re-teaching and/or interventions when appropriate

C. Classroom Management

  • Create and support an open and honest culture within the advisory group
  • Build a positive and respectful atmosphere for learning
  • Monitor student attendance with a 90 percent rate as a goal
  • Accept and track projects on Project Foundry

 D. Cooperate with Learning Team

  • Willingness to team with other teaching staff in improving mathematics and reading instruction program-wide
  • Take part in NLCS staff development activities
  • Work with special education staff members to support identified students
  • Contribute to the achievement of NLCS’ annual goals
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, parents, and students

 E. Parent and Community Involvement

  • Hold at least two meetings with a parent or guardian of each student during the school year
  • Lead the advisory in hosting at least one community event per year

Job Description & Responsibilities

The Special Education Teacher will be developed, supported, and guided by the School Director and Special Education Director, and Special Education Coordinator. The Special Education Teacher’s major responsibilities are:

Special Education Case Management—Assume responsibility for case compliance and student academic progress, write IEPs and consult with regular education teachers, keep IEPs updated with the achievement of goals and objectives, issue quarterly progress reports on IEP goals for students and families, schedule and coordinate annual IEP meetings, ensure all evaluation recommendations are followed up with and completed, consult with Special Education Coordinator as necessary to ensure compliance, provide individualized instruction based on needs of IEPs 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education
  • Appropriate Minnesota State Teacher License

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective teacher methods and developmentally appropriate classroom activities
  • Ability to maintain a positive learning environment for all students
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to defuse and resolve conflict with students, parents and co-workers by demonstrating poise, tact and diplomacy
  • Computer competency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, e-mail and Internet
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Regular, prompt attendance is essential
  • Proficient in completing required duties accurately and efficiently according to established timelines
  • Ability to work cooperatively, collaboratively and effectively with all students, parents and staff in a team environment
  • Perceptive and capable of relating to individuals at all levels within the school

Special Education 1:1 Paraprofessional

Northern Lights Community School is currently seeking a Special Education 1:1 Paraprofessional to assist in the instruction of students with disabilities in mainstream and resource room settings.

Special Education Paraprofessional Responsibilities:

Implement student lessons to meet learning objectives under direct supervision
Work directly with an individual student or student groups in daily classroom tasks, activities and assignments, monitoring and re-directing behaviors using appropriate communication and effective intervention strategies.
Implement positive student support plans as outlined and/or implementing behavior strategies outlined by the special education teacher (can include re-directing, calming or supporting replacement behaviors).
Monitor and/or recording student progress in instructional areas
Manage student physical needs when appropriate (can include toileting, feeding, dressing, lifting, positioning, transporting students in wheelchairs, etc.)
Carrying out the requirements of individual learning plans
Perform supervision of meal services, recess, and bus duties as assigned
Engage in constant reflective practices, individually and with peers, to improve the quality of your professional practice
Conduct portions of student evaluations (with training) to include: structured observations, daily student tracking, and/or teacher/student/parent interviews
Attendance at IEP and evaluation team meetings
Assist the special education teacher in planning and implementing special education curriculum
Assist the special education teacher in planning for modifying instruction of grade level content standards across curriculum
Participate in all licensed staff professional development
Attend all parent/teacher conferences for students with special needs
Respond to daily student needs when the special education teacher in otherwise engaged
Develop, implement, track, and critique interventions with students with special needs for their effectiveness
